“Let me get that,” Addy said, taking Preston’s bag from him. She walked down the steps and headed straight for the gate to Greystone. As pissed off as she was at him, she still couldn’t stand to see him struggle.
Grimm was already waiting with Hillary and Ziba. Unfortunately for him, he was stuck lugging Ziba’s things back to her shop for her before he could go home to Ravensbog. Remy still wasn’t back and Addy planned on tracking her down as soon as the others were gone.
“Addison, if you’re sending Grimm and Remy back to the bog you’ll be here alone,” Preston said, stopping next to Hillary. “The blue tentacles on the back of your neck look like they’ve gotten worse just since you returned earlier.”
Addy pulled her hair out of the ponytail it was in and then reached up and activated the gate. “I’ll be over to check in on you tomorrow,” she said to Grimm, completely ignoring Preston. “I’ll send Remy back shortly.”
“Thanks,” Grimm said, bowing his head to her before stepping through the gate.
Hillary didn’t say anything. She looked stressed and worried, most likely over Preston being sent home. She just kissed Addy on the cheek before taking Ziba by the arm. Ziba was being uncharacteristically quiet also, and simply bowed her head to Addy as Hillary led her into the glowing blue arch.
That left Preston standing alone in front of Addy. “If you need me—”
“I won’t,” she said, crossing her arms.
Preston leaned forward, kissing her forehead as he took his bag from her. “It was a privilege spending these last months here with you and Jackson, Shepherdess.” He bowed his head and limped through the gate.
Part of her didn’t know why she was being so stubborn—she really didn’t want him to leave. Eventually her anger would fade and they’d be fine. The sensible part of her knew that making him go home was for the best—she couldn’t let him care for her so much that he’d cross lines he couldn’t come back from. She truly hated hurting him though, and decided when things cooled down she’d go see him and explain why he had to go.
Addy deactivated the gate and walked over to the bench outside of the shelter and sat down. If she didn’t count Jax sleeping in the sub-basement, it was the first time in her life that she’d been alone at the estate. She actually lived alone—it was strange.
Rather than sit there contemplating what someone who lives alone is supposed to do with all that alone time, she got to her feet and went into the house. She locked everything up and then sealed all of the doors and windows with her powers. Once she was satisfied no one was getting inside, she prepared herself to go drag Remy out of Parker’s arms one last time.
